OUR PROGRAMS
The Department strives to become a regional hub of excellence in teaching and research in Applied English Language Studies, literature, and literary criticism. It aims to contribute effectively to the development of students’ linguistic and research skills, critical thinking abilities and skills, and the production of knowledge in language-related and literary fields through scientific research.
It has started this academic year 2020/2021 offering a new program replacing the old one. The new program consists of 57 core compulsory courses in communication skills, linguistics, and literature; 29 hours of college and university requirement courses; 30 credit hours in a minor program; and 3 hours of a free elective course. The new program allows students to combine English studies with a minor in Linguistics, Literature, Translation, American Studies, and French. This program has been built on the stakeholders’ feedback to ensure that the program reflects the development and advancement of knowledge and the needs of the labor market.
The courses combine theory and practice through individual and group assignments and projects to ensure that students gain sound theoretical knowledge and also have hands-on experience in real-life communication and apply methods of analysis and critical thinking.
The graduates of our BA program usually get immediate employment as teachers, editors, diplomats, public relations personnel, and translation.
The Department also offers an MA program in Applied English Language Studies. The program mainly focuses on applied linguistics issues in order to link linguistics to real-life language-related problems. The graduates of this program are expected to be able to apply specialized research methods to investigate viable and feasible research topics in language related areas and, hence, be able to contribute to the advancement of knowledge and the local Bahraini community.
Both the undergraduate and graduate programs have a documented record of high employment success and acceptance for further studies in internationally recognized universities.
The Department is characterized by a vibrant environment conducive to fruitful engagement of faculty and students. It distinguishes itself by providing students with a leading-edge qualification in both theory and practice in language-related fields, literature, and communication skills.
