ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Social Sciences was established on May 10, 1999 based on the decision of the Board of Trustees, which provided for the reorganization of the Faculty of Arts. The department is currently offering the Bachelor’s in History program (a solo major) in addition to the Archaeology of Bahrain and the Arabian Peninsula minor program for students taking the Bachelor’s in History, as well as elective courses in Sociology for all university students. The department works to keep abreast of modern scientific and applied developments in all its programs at the Bachelor’s level. The department is currently seeking to offer postgraduate (diploma, master’s, and doctoral) programs.

The Department‘s Vision:

The Department seeks to prepare professional and scientific cadres, and provide the community with competencies in all fields of the developmental and historical social sciences.


The Department’s Message:

The department, with its scientific branches, works to prepare and train scientific and technical cadres capable of contributing to the development of society, who safeguard their national soil and cherish their heritage and values of tolerance and openness to other civilizations, leading to the achievement of comprehensive quality. This they arrive at through understanding history, with regard to the past and present, so as to foresee the future. They also carry out scientific and applied studies of social and historical phenomena, and work to lead professional practice in the developmental, educational, cultural, social, health, and comprehensive human security fields as well as all vital areas of society.

OUR PROGRAMS

The Department is currently offering two academic programs, namely the Bachelor in History and the Bachelor in Sociology.

The Bachelor in History Program is characterized by enabling the student to acquire a high level of knowledge in history, in addition to helping him/her in developing an in-depth critical vision that helps him/her in analyzing the contemporary issues in view of the historical facts.

In addition, the program enables the student to employ the historical events in a way that achieves a close connection with the homeland and consolidates the Arab and Islamic identity, while highlighting the civilizational impact of the Kingdom of Bahrain.

The Bachelor in Sociology Program is characterized by enabling the student to employ the sociological research tools in diagnosing the social issues and problems and, accordingly, to work on analyzing them in a critical and detailed manner, in addition to helping the student to set out contemporary solutions and perceptions to such issues.

Both programs in common enable the student to implement the projects and researches individually or collectively, by using the most prominent means and methods of scientific research, in addition to providing him/her with modern technologies in the Major, to help him/her manage the information and provide advanced academic presentations on the topics of the historical, social studies and the supporting sciences.

With its scientific sections, the Department works to prepare and form scientific and technical cadres that are able to contribute to the development of the society, preserve their nation and cherish their heritage and values of tolerance and openness to other civilizations, which leads to the achievement of comprehensive quality, through understanding history in the past and present to foresee the future, the scientific and applied studies of the social and historical phenomena, and working on leading the professional practice in the fields of development, education, learning, culture, social, health, and comprehensive human security in all the vital areas of the society, towards achieving comprehensive quality in all the programs it offers, through advanced strategies in applied university education with the aim of achieving sustainable development plans, in harmony with the strategy of the University of Bahrain and its National Vision, which aims to achieve a prestigious international level in the field of scientific research, entrepreneurship and research skills within the framework of the Kingdom of Bahrain’s Vision 2030.

OUR FACULTY

The Department of Social Sciences consists of an elite group of professors who belong to various disciplines in history, archaeology, political science, and sociology, having graduated from well-known Arab and Western universities. The professors have produced many studies published in refereed scientific journals, and have published a great deal of research and books in both languages: Arabic and English. They have many papers published in Scopus, and have participated in various local, regional, and international conferences. In addition, they have participated in international forums and have received numerous international and national awards.
