PROGRAM LEVEL
The Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics is mapped to Level 9 of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF), the Education and Training Quality Authority (BQA). Comprising 156 NQF credits—thereby exceeding the national threshold of 120 NQF credits required for a Master’s degree—the programme features a significant research component via a dissertation.
In alignment with NQF Level 9 descriptors, graduates are required to demonstrate a critical awareness of current perspectives and highly specialised knowledge at the forefront of the discipline. The curriculum structurally facilitates the development of advanced analytical and problem-solving skills, enabling learners to apply theoretical frameworks to complex and unpredictable professional contexts.
Furthermore, the programme addresses the NQF competence criteria by fostering a high degree of autonomy, ethical responsibility, and self-direction in research. Through the integration of elective modules and the execution of the dissertation, students deploy specialised methodologies to conduct independent academic enquiry, fulfilling the specialist benchmarks demanded of Level 9 postgraduate awards.
