ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

Psychology now occupies a distinct position among the rest of the sciences because it provides psychological and social counseling services in all fields, and it also serves broad sectors of society. A new focus on dealing with the positive aspects of personality, especially with regard to this new field, which is receiving great interest from researchers. It is the field of positive psychology, therefore, the Department of Psychology at the University of Bahrain is striving actively through its programs to keep pace with the successive changes and rapid developments that this science is going through in order to be able to provide appropriate counseling and psychological services, which undoubtedly contribute to achieving the development of positive social behavior and then achieving human development in the society. The Department encourages faculty members to conduct scientific research that serves broad sectors of society, and encourages them to provide training courses, workshops and seminars that serve the community.
The Department of Psychology was established in 1978, and relies on its activities on a set of axes that can be summarized as follows:
1) Teaching courses at the university level.
2) Teaching courses at the level of college requirements.
3) Teaching specialized courses.
4) Contributing to scientific research at the college, university, and community levels.
5) Contributing to community service by organizing training courses, workshops, providing lectures in schools and private educational and social institutions, and civil society, and contributing to various media.

OUR PROGRAMS

The Department offers one Master Program; Higher Diploma Program and Master’s Program in Family Counselling, and minor program in Psychology in general. The Department aims from these offered programs to prepare specialists in psychology, to encourage scientific research and scientific studies, to provide psychological services to members of society, and to consult the public and private sectors. Contributing to the development of scientific research at the University and outside it by preparing scientific research, publishing it, and standardizing psychological and educational tests. And participation in developing curricula and educational books in the Ministry of Education and raising the level of teachers and qualifying them. Through these programs, it is possible to provide technical preparation for students in the field of school psychological counseling for all levels of education. Preparing mentors who are able to work in institutions of care and psychosocial services, and psychological preparation for students in the field of educational and vocational guidance for all levels of education. As well as mastery of the theoretical, cognitive and scientific foundations of family counseling. And the basic techniques in family counseling and practicing it professionally. And the foundations of research and planning in family counseling and its practical practice.

OUR FACULTY

The Department includes ten members, three of them with the rank of professor, five with the rank of associate professor, one member with the rank of assistant professor, and one member with the rank of lecturer in a variety of disciplines, including specializations in educational psychology, social psychology, psychological statistics, measurement and testing, clinical psychology, and family and psychological counseling and mental health, industrial psychology, measurement and educational evaluation, and from Arab and international universities: the universities of Cairo, Ain Shams, Tanta, and Mansoura, the universities of Birmingham, Brunel in England, the University of Southern California in the United States of America, and the Institute of General Educational Sciences of the Soviet Union. They have diverse research interests focusing on mental health in general and positive psychology in particular.
